Wisdom teeth... what problems might they cause?

Wisdom Teeth... what problems could it cause?

Wisdom teeth are the last developed teeth in the mouth, usually they erupt between the age of 17 - 25, for many reasons some people don't develop these teeth at all, while others and it causes them many problems,

the main reason for these problems is that there is not enough room for the tooth to erupt into the mouth, which causes to one of the following cases.

Partial eruption:

When there is not enough space for the tooth to erupt into the mouth, it will erupt partially and a portion of its surface will remain covered by the gum, which might be the cause for one of the followings:

- the gum that covers the tooth partially might get crushed by the opposite tooth which will cause an inflammation in it and starts to cause pain.

- food remnants might accumulate under the gum that covers the tooth partially, which will result in local infection and starts showing pain.

- because of the pressure caused by the stuck tooth, the other adjacent molar might endure resorption.

Complete Impaction:

In some cases when there is no space for the tooth, the tooth won't have the chance to appear in the mouth at all and it will stay buried in the bone totally, in this case there won't be any sign of illness but the problem is developing slowly by the time, and it might cause one of the followings:

- a cyst might develop itself around the buried tooth causing destruction in the surrounding bone.

- the neighbor tooth might endure resorption due to the pressure applied on it by the buried tooth.

How will the wisdom tooth be taken out?

If the tooth hasn't erupted into the mouth, a small incision will be made in the gum to access it. A small piece of bone covering the tooth may need to be removed to reach it.

The tooth can then be cut into smaller pieces to make it easier to remove through the incision.

You will feel some pressure just before the tooth is extracted, as the dentist or oral surgeon needs to expand the alveolar bone around the tooth by gently rocking it back and forth before removing it.

You shouldn't feel any pain during wisdom tooth removal because the area will be numbed. However, if you do experience pain during the procedure, tell your dentist or oral surgeon so they can give you an additional dose of anesthetic.

How long does the extraction process take?

The time required to remove a tooth varies. Simple procedures can take just a few minutes, but more complex ones can take more than 20 minutes.

What happens after the extraction?

If an incision is made, sutures (surgical stitches) will be used to close the gum. Your dentist will tell you how long it will take for the sutures to be removed (usually 7 to 10 days).

Your dentist may place a piece of gauze over the extraction site and ask you to keep pressure on it by clenching your jaw together for up to two hours. This allows a blood clot to form at the site of the extracted tooth. This is part of the healing process, so you should not remove it.

In some cases, antibiotics may be prescribed if you have a pre-existing infection.

Your dentist will warn you against the following for 24 hours after wisdom tooth extraction:

Rinsing your mouth with liquids or mouthwash

Drinking alcohol and smoking

Drinking hot liquids such as tea or soup

Strenuous physical activity

If you do not follow your dentist's instructions, the extraction site will not heal completely, which could lead to infection.

Do I need to have my wisdom teeth extracted?

The need for wisdom tooth extraction varies depending on the tooth's location and the symptoms it causes (such as pain or swelling). However, most dentists agree that a tooth that has erupted or is not yet erupting, and whose axis of formation is not parallel to the adjacent teeth or where there is insufficient space for it to erupt in its correct position, needs to be extracted, even if it is not currently causing pain. This is because it can be a source of many problems that may arise in the future.
